Wind and gas - Back-up or back-out, That is the question

Published 2011 / 12
Summary Wind turbines (and other volatile energy technologies) can be used to replace fossil fuel burning power plants and reduce CO2 emissions, however backup plants are required to provide capacity and energy at the times that wind power in unavailable. These backup plants do emit CO2, and therefore the effective CO2 emissions reduction achieved by renewable technologies is limited by the choice for backup.
